Choosing a gemstone: what to know before you buy

Why the chart comes first, what a lab certificate should say, and how to care for a stone once it is yours.

In Vedic tradition, gemstones are chosen for the planets they are associated with, which is why the chart comes first. A stone that suits one person may not suit another, so it is worth a conversation before you buy.

Look for a natural, untreated stone with a certificate from an independent gemological lab. The certificate should name the stone, its weight, and any treatment. If a seller cannot show one, it is fair to ask why.

Weight is usually measured in ratti or carats. Heavier is not always better; what matters more is clarity and that the stone is genuine.

Once it is yours, keep it clean with a soft cloth and store it apart from other jewellery. Simple care keeps a stone looking as it should for years.
